Bangkok

A city with over 400 golden temples and a reputation as the world’s street-food capital — wrapped around a river that still works like its main artery.

The Grand Palace is the heart of Bangkok — two centuries of Thai royalty, its golden spires blinding in the sun. Across the Chao Phraya, Wat Arun is tiled in colored porcelain and lit by the first light of dawn — the Temple of Dawn.

Inside Wat Pho lies a reclining Buddha 46 m long and 15 m high, gold-plated, with mother-of-pearl soles. The river itself is the city’s great artery: longtail boats, floating markets, and riverside food stalls.

After dark, the other side of the city lights up — night markets, rooftop bars, and river cruises that run late into the night.

Before you go

When is the best time to visit Bangkok?+

November to February: the cool, dry season. March to May is punishingly hot, and the June to October monsoon brings heavy afternoon downpours, though they usually pass quickly.

What is the dress code for the Grand Palace and temples?+

Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women, and you remove your shoes inside temple halls. Wear or carry something to cover up; vendors outside sell wraps, but it is cheaper to bring your own.

How many days do you need in Bangkok?+

Two to three. One for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun by river, one for the markets and Chinatown, and a third for a day trip to the old capital at Ayutthaya.

Is the guided temple tour worth it over going alone?+

For your first visit, yes. A guide gets you in early, explains what you are looking at, and handles the river boats. If you would rather wander, go independently but arrive at the Grand Palace at opening to beat the heat and the tour groups.
