About 3,600 years ago, one of the most violent eruptions in human history blew a huge gap in this round island. The sea flooded the crater, leaving the cliff-ringed bay we see today.
Along the clifftops, white-walled, blue-domed houses stack one above another like shells hung over the sea. At the northern tip, Oia is considered one of the most beautiful sunset spots in the world.
Three hundred metres below lies the deep-blue Aegean, where boats cross the caldera. The volcanic-ash soil grows the island’s own white wine — and some say the eruption inspired the legend of lost Atlantis.
